For centuries man has bred scent hounds. He has sought traits like courage, determination, intelligence, persistance, confidence, a 'cold' nose and proper conformation. This has resulted in the creation of a noble animal and to experience the collective working of a pack folowing the scent of their quarry is truly memorable. The breed history of our hounds dates back to 18th centuary Europe when hunters refined the qualities of their hounds almost specifically for the pursuit and dispatching of the Wolf.
It is this hound which we employ in tracking the elusive and cunning Leopard, a beauty worthy of the utmost respect - a master of his environment. This brave hound is used again for driving out the tough Bush-Pig, secretive yet very successful , as evidence is his wide distribution.A great challenge for the hounds and hunters is the African Lynx/Caracal, this cat leaves very little sign and scent , only the most dilligent hounds can complete an aged track from start to end.
We have created a mixed culture of African, European and American hunting techniques and traditions resulting in a hunt only we can offer. Our services and that of our hounds is offered in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana.
We will also recover wounded leopard in South Africa.
Leopard - we start by searching the entire hunting concession for sign of a suitable adult male. He is identified by a larger track and stride than the female.Upon finding a track, 1 or 2 "sleuth" hounds are directed to the track for investigation, if the spoor is fresh enough to follow the hounds will open with a long drawl- if not- the hunting party must track the cat by sight, intermittantly giving the hounds a chance. When the hounds confirm the scent is present enough to follow, the hunting party depart on foot behind the lead hounds with the rest of the pack. This is the most exciting part of the hunt as we follow in the cats' footsteps - learning his exact movements, all the while hearing the sweet music of the hounds. As the gap between hunter and hunted closes, the pace of the hunt increases, until the cat is jumped. The pressure of the hounds voices forces the cat to escape up a tree or into a cave/burrow. The hunter must now gather his wits and harvet this noble animal to the great excitement of the hounds.
Rarely do we hunt a cat from a 'bait' unless declared to be a 'problem animal' experienced in Ranching areas. This means the Client must be in suitable physical condition with the determination to truly hunt. We rely on the ability of the Hounds, favorable scent conditions and the collective knowledge and skills of Hunters and Trackers.
Bushpig - generally we hunt the tough Bushpig in areas where he is in conflict with man. We start again by looking for relatively fresh tracks, whereupon we release several trustworthy hounds. Sometimes the pigs rest in the food source(maize, sugarcane, macadamia orchards etc) other times they travel several kilometers to denser bush. The hounds follow the spoor in full cry until the individual or sounder is jumped, whereupon the chase begins. The Bushpig has enormous reserves of energy and can remain ahead of the hounds for many hours. When finally he decides to stop, he will choose the densest bush within his home range and herein make a stand. The hounds hold him at bay until the hunting party arrives to dispatch, at very short range, this magnificent adversary.
Caracal - again we often hunt the Caracal in areas where he is known to prey on livestock or valuable game. A pack totalling 8 to 10 hounds are freecast in an area where spoor for the cat is frequently found. The hounds must be diligent as the Caracal does not leave large deposits of scent. When a scent line is struck, all the hounds congregate and jostle for the sweet aroma of the spoor - full voices indicate they are making headway and will shortly jump the cat. The Caracal will opt for discretion rather than valour and choose an escape route up a tree or in a tight crevise. The hounds will stay treed until the Hunter claims the prize with Bow, Handgun or Rifle.
